Ecologists demand publication of Achna dam findings

Relevant News

In a statement, the Ecology party expresses its concerns about the findings of the analyses at the Achna Dam, while seeking answers from the competent authorities.

The statement:

It has been an entire month since the leak in the Achna Dam caused by wastewater from a neighbouring livestock farm.

However, there has been no official update regarding the authorities’ investigation into this very serious pollution incident of a uniquely significant wetland, part of the Natura 2000 European network of protected areas.

Were the massive wastewater tanks licensed and legal? Why were no preventative measures taken to protect the dam from potential leaks? Why is the operation of livestock farms allowed on the shores of the dam lake? What will be the consequences for the company rumoured to own the wastewater tanks? Could the fact that it is one of the largest cattle farming and dairy units in Cyprus create conditions for cover-ups?

So far, we have received no official information from the competent authorities or findings based on laboratory results concerning the unsuitability of the water for irrigating adjacent crops.

The issue is alarming, especially in light of our own laboratory tests which raise legitimate concerns. Our analyses reveal significant pollution of the dam’s waters. What do the analyses from the Water Department and the Environmental Department say?

We demand the disclosure of the analysis results from government laboratories as well as a thorough investigation into the responsibilities of the leak and the implementation of all measures prescribed by legislation.

The polluter pays regardless of who they are.
