Dust hits Cyprus, health officials warn public

Relevant News

High concentrations of dust are observed in Cyprus today, prompting health officials to warn residents, particularly vulnerable groups, to avoid spending time outdoors.

The Department of Labour Inspection, which monitors air quality, noted that Limassol witnessed the worst conditions with readings reaching 119.6 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), well above the daily limit of 50 µg/m3 set by national legislation.

Other areas including Nicosia, Larnaca, Paphos, and Zygi also experienced significantly elevated dust levels.

The tiny size of these dust particles, known as PM10 (diameter less than 10 micrometres), poses a health risk, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems.

Authorities are urging these groups to stay indoors and avoid exertion until the dust episode subsides.

Employers with outdoor workplaces are required to implement appropriate measures to safeguard their employees. This may include providing dust masks or altering work schedules.

For the latest air quality updates and real-time data, residents are advised to visit the Department of Labour Inspection’s website or download the free mobile application “Air Quality Cyprus”.

In detail, the latest hourly dust concentrations measured at 8:00 am in the following areas are:

Nicosia:78.0 Î¼g/m3
