Limassolians to protest high rents

Relevant News

A march is being organised in Limassool for Saturday, April 27, to protest high rents.

The protest will start at 17:00, at the square in front of the administration offices in Anexartisias Street (Dioikitirio). The march is organised by the Initiative for Housing, a grassroots citizen’s group focusing on problems surrounding housing in Cyprus.

In its statement, the Initiative for Housing notes how expensive life on the island has become, as salaries remain stagnant while rents and consumer prices keep increasing.

“We cannot pin our hopes on the famed development and the luxurious high-rise buildings”, the statement continues. “Nor can we expect the landlords who rent us crumbling 800-euro studios to suddenly care about us and reduce our rents. Landlords only care about their interests”.

“We will only reclaim our neighbourhoods and our lives when we come together to firmly address our needs in opposition to the state’s policies, the affluent landlords, and the gentrification of cities”, the statement concludes.
