Cypriot alliance calls for international anti-racism day rally

Relevant News

The Alliance Against the Far Right, Fascism and Racism in Cyprus is calling on all citizens, including refugees and migrants, to join their anti-racism rally on Wednesday, March 20, in honour of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

This demonstration unites Cypriots with worldwide anti-racism efforts as similar rallies are planned across the globe.

The group highlights two key areas demanding action: the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which they label a “monstrous crime” rooted in racism, and the escalating racist attacks within Cyprus.

They blame these attacks on hate speech from government officials, media outlets, and groups linked to the far-right ELAM party.

Additionally, they criticise the government’s “institutional racism” evident in policies like pushbacks, increased border security, and inhumane detention centres for asylum seekers and refugees.

Formed in response to recent racist violence, including the “racist pogroms” in Chloraka and Limassol, the group stresses its inclusivity and welcomes all “democratic organisations and democratic citizens” to bolster their ranks.

The rally kicks off on Wednesday, March 20, with a gathering at Solomou Square in Nicosia at 5 p.m.

This will be followed by a march to Faneromeni, where the main event will take place.
