Corrective measures to be enforced for Akamas

Relevant News

Serious errors and significant deviations from the terms set by the Environmental Authority for projects in Akamas have prompted the Government Council to make substantial decisions.

As confirmed to Phieleftheros by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment (MADRE), the measures decided upon include, among other things, the following:

a) The responsibility for implementing projects outlined in the Sustainable Development Plan of the National Forest Park Akamas is removed from the Department of Forests and is now transferred to the General Directorate of Environment of the MADRE.

b) A monitoring team for the projects is established, involving various departments of the MADRE, with substantial engagement and oversight by the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus.

c) A project manager will be hired.

d) The administrative investigation continues, with the final report expected to be submitted by January 15, 2024.

e) The projects are put on hold until mid-February 2024, by which time a new proposal with a specific timeline for the continuation and completion of the projects in the existing construction site is expected to be submitted to the Government Council.
