Citizens report extensive environmental damage in Pedoulas

Relevant News

Large excavations, pine tree cuttings, and the opening of a public road with damage to foreign plots for the installation of a mobile phone tower in Pedoulas have been reported by affected citizens, residents, and businesses in the area.

According to a statement from the Ecologists Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation, the urban planning permit was secured, but complainants allege that the area’s location was concealed to obtain approval.

“Despite successfully persuading the Town Planning Department to request a suspension of work and the revocation of the permit on August 30, 2023, the work reportedly resumed two weeks ago,” they claim.

The Ecologists urgently called on all involved parties to ensure that the work will cease.

“The complaints to the Town Planning Department appear to be valid for the permit revocation, making the installation illegal in a forested area adjacent to residences and a hotel.”

Moreover, they demand an immediate assessment of the environmental damage suffered by the forest in the area where trees were cut down and excavations took place, as well as the complete restoration of the destruction.

“Health is a good that cannot be sacrificed on the altar of private interests. The environment is not privatized.”
