Agia Thekla body leaves investigators with more questions than answers

Relevant News

An autopsy on the remains found in a decomposed state in a rocky area of Agia Thekla in Sotira on Monday afternoon has shed no light on the identity of the person.

According to police, no injuries were found, and X-rays were taken to be studied by anthropologists to determine the gender and age. Additionally, the time of death cannot be accurately estimated due to the advanced decomposition. Samples were taken from the body for genetic testing.

Initial indications, however, suggest that the body may belong to a woman and may have washed ashore from the sea.

While no possibility is ruled out at this stage, the most likely scenario is that the body is related to a migrant shipwreck that occurred last December.

It is noted that in January and February, five bodies were washed ashore in the occupied territories and are also believed to be related to the specific shipwreck.

The woman’s body was found on Monday at 2 pm by a citizen who informed the police. As stated by the Police Spokesman, Christos Andreou, “It was found that it was a human body, from the waist down and that it was in an advanced state of decomposition.

From the first moment, the Port and Maritime Police were informed, members of which began patrols and examinations in the sea area, to locate possibly other findings that could help the investigators in identifying the body and the causes of death”.
