The majority of opposition parties yesterday called for the immediate resignation of Finance Minister Harris Georgiades following a heated debate in parliament over the findings of an independent investigative committee’s report looking into the scandalous collapse of the Cyprus Cooperative Bank.
MPs from opposition partied traded harsh adjectives such as liars, slanderers and fairy-tale producers in their accusations and counter-responses. At the same time, a resolution is now being drafted by all but one opposition party calling for the immediate resignation of Finance Minister Harris Georgiades.
Only far right ELAM is not agreeing with this resolution which also demands that the government accepts full responsibility for the recent scandal. It is set to go to the plenary for a vote next week.
The opposition parties also demand that assets of the Co-op bank should be protected and returned to the people. They will also demand criminal and civil liability be sought, with emphasis on the Finance Minister’s decision to distribute free Co-op shares to citizens arguing that at the time he was making this promise the Minister was also paving the way for the Co-op’s dissolution and its handing over to the Hellenic Bank.
Ruling Disy party leader Averof Neophytou fiercely countered the accusations, but made absolutely no mention of the Finance Minister. Neophytou also went as far as to recall the issue of accounts opened at overseas tax havens by operators of Co-op bank branches controlled by main Opposition Akel.
