She produces, sells, collects, they kill

The Americans are fuelling wars, much to the delight of the Europeans, who, despite their inability to voice an opinion, are left footing the bill. As announced, the US House of Representatives has decided to sustain the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, granting $61 billion to Ukraine and $26 billion to Israel.

Included in the latter, as mentioned, is humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. They strengthen the aggressor, the perpetrator with military means, and send consolation aid to the victim.

Regarding Ukraine, the war has proven that as long as it rages on, the Russians are gaining ground (Russia now controls 18% of Ukrainian territory). Thus, the logic behind this decision stems from President Biden’s assertion that it will boost the American economy, as it will put US factories to work. In other words, the strategy is tied to a war economy. She produces, sells, collects, they kill.

As for Gaza, the genocide continues, and Israel’s allies persist in abetting this crime in various ways, including through their silence. Testimonies from Khan Yunis indicate that following the withdrawal of Israeli occupying forces, a mass grave has been discovered. Around two hundred bodies have been found, mostly women, children, and the elderly. Some of the deceased had their hands bound behind their backs, a ‘practice’ also employed during the invasion of Cyprus.

When the Turkish occupying army executed civilians and soldiers with their hands tied behind their backs. But these are mere details, quickly forgotten when dealing with the weak and the victimised.

The existence of mass graves is proof that war crimes have been committed. And occupied Cyprus, it must be reminded, is riddled with mass graves of those executed by the Turkish occupying army. In such cases, the International Criminal Court must investigate these mass graves, as it has done for other instances, like those discovered outside Kyiv in 2022.

But it is also a detail that all indications point to Israel preparing for military operations in Rafah, having reportedly secured a green light from its allies. Approximately 1.5 million Palestinian refugees have sought refuge in Rafah, as is well known.

Western allies are quick to aid Ukraine and Israel. Is Israel under attack from Palestinians in Gaza? It is the aggressor. Yet, when it struck the Iranian consulate in Damascus, and Tehran ‘responded’, the US, NATO, and the EU sided with Tel Aviv, which always has a ‘right to self-defence’. No one else seems to have that right.

The geopolitical puzzle has set norms. For instance, Turkey is never accused of its ongoing occupation of territories belonging to the Republic of Cyprus. Instead, and this is bolstered by certain parties in Nicosia and Athens, the Greek side in Cyprus is blamed for ‘not wanting a solution’. And especially these days, the fairy tale of ‘missed opportunities’ resurfaces.

History and our experiences over the decades demonstrate that neither Cypriots nor Palestinians can find justice under the current circumstances. However, this reality should not be accepted fatalistically.

Even the EU, directionless and dragged along by the Americans, needs to redefine its terms and objectives, drawing on its own history. It cannot keep shooting itself in the foot and, colourless and voiceless, follow the geopolitical designs of others.
