Tourist season starts with damaged Agios Tychonas promenade

Relevant News

The coastal promenade of Agios Tychonas has remained almost unusable for months following the storm and bad weather of last November.

The promenade has suffered damage, resulting in some areas lacking safety for those who use it, while in at least two sections, with a length of 150 meters each, its use has become impossible as it has literally been split in half.

This is a promenade used daily by hundreds of locals and tourists staying in the area.

However, it remains in the same tragic condition for months, with the responsible ministry showing indifference to covering the cost for its repair.

The problems observed on the coastal promenade were discussed spontaneously yesterday before the Parliamentary Trade Committee, with Members of Parliament criticizing the absence of a representative from the Ministry of Interior from the session.

The issue was raised following a proposal from MPs Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis, Kostas Kostas, Yannakis Gavriel, Andreas Pasiourtides, and Panikos Leonidou.

All involved parties attended the meeting, with MPs hearing again about studies and designs.

It is noteworthy that the meeting took place once again in the absence of a representative from the Ministry of Interior, which did not go unnoticed by MPs, who criticized the attitude of the Ministry towards such a serious issue.

At the same time, they highlighted in front of everyone the fact that Cyprus is becoming an international embarrassment because the State cannot repair damages to a promenade.

The MP of DISY, Nikos Sykas, stated that this specific promenade connects and unites all the five-star hotels and that “we should only feel ashamed”.

He supported that promises were made by the Ministry of Interior for temporary landscaping to ensure unhindered accessibility, however, nothing was done.

On his part, the MP of AKEL, Kostas Kostas, criticized the whole issue, stating that “it is truly shameful that in Cyprus and in one of its most expensive areas, with the largest and most expensive hotels, there is a promenade in this condition”.

Apart from the damages caused, he also mentioned other infrastructures, referring to public showers in a terrible condition, branches scattered for many months, rusted irons on the walls collapsing, cut and exposed electrical wires, and no lighting at night.

The cost of repairs amounts to €300,000, and despite promises made by MPs for 80% funding from the State and the rest from the Agios Tychonas Community Council, from January until now and while the new tourist season has started, absolutely nothing has been done.

The MP of the Ecologists’ Movement, Stavros Papadouris, mentioned his personal experience in his statement.

He said that he was on the promenade the night before yesterday and was using the flashlight of his mobile phone to be able to see while walking. He also criticized the absence of a representative from the Ministry of Interior from the meeting.
