Nicosia Municipality crews have started work to clear and reinforce the abandoned building which once housed the Spitfire cafe at Paphos Gate, within the walled city.
The building is on the Green Line and its current condition poses a risk to the safety of passers-by.
The municipality said that its personnel and workers have often been called upon to work under difficult conditions.
“Today, within the buffer zone and under the gaze of the Turkish military they have been called upon to protect the cultural heritage of Cyprus,” it added.
The division and the occupation of parts of Nicosia within the walls, as well as the wear and tear of time — as it is extremely difficult if not imposssible in some cases to maintain and restore buildings in the buffer zone — leads to the daily deterioration of buildings, including of the Spitfire, it added.
