Machia Genethliou presents her third solo art exhibition titled “Between the Lines” at the Limassol Municipal University Library.

Through her artworks, Machia explores the convergence of science, technology, and art, embarking on a journey of discovery and contemplation. The exhibition showcases abstract dripping paintings crafted from epoxy resin, a rather fluid art matter that challenges the limits of artistic control as it has its own character and motion, often creating unpredictable shapes and patterns. The opening event will be held by Mr. Nicos Nicolaides, Mayor of Limassol, on Thursday 16th of May, at 18.00, while the exhibition will last till the 22nd of May.

“Between the Lines” is co-organized by the Limassol Municipality and the Cyprus University of Technology.

The exhibition “Between the lines” is an artistic study that delves into the concept of linearity as both a visual element and a metaphorical representation of understanding the world. Machia Genethliou reflects on the ways that lines have permeated our surroundings, from the vast expanse of the sky to the depths of the sea, from the pathways we tread to the emotions we experience. The line transcends its literal interpretation, becoming a metaphorical symbol of connection and transformation.

The exhibition explores the philosophical implications of lines intersecting emotions, thoughts, and actions, weaving a narrative of interconnectedness across various realms of human experience. From the boundary between normality and insanity to the blurred lines between happiness and sadness, linearity extends into every facet of existence. It prompts contemplation of the elusive thresholds between life and death, science and religion, art and technology and allows a fundamental question: is there a realm beyond human sight?

The artist seeks to capture the essence of the unseen line, breathing life into her creations through vibrant pigments and dynamic forms. Drawing inspiration from Hito Steyerl’s notion of “seeing the unseen,” Machia contemplates technology’s potential to stretch the conventional limits of the visible, beyond the comprehension of the human eye. Ηer artworks often cite the remarkable imagery produced by the James Webb Space Telescope. By drawing parallels between fluid art and technological imagery, the artist comments on the fluidity of creativity and its resemblance to the algorithms driving technological advancements. She explores how artists like Lynda Benglis embrace the fluidity of materials, allowing them to dictate the shape of their creations, akin to the fluidity of digital processes.

As viewers immerse themselves in the universe of the exhibition “Between the Lines,” they are encouraged to contemplate the unseen connections that bind our world together. Through her artistic expression, Machia Genethliou unveils the beauty of intersecting notions and ideas, inviting us to envision the unseen in the spaces between the lines.
