The contracts for the construction of Phase A of the project ‘Integrated Rehabilitation of the Makariou – Stasikratous – Evagorou Commercial Triangle for the Promotion of Sustainable Mobility’ were signed on Wednesday by Nicosia mayor Constantinos Yiorkatzis and Iraklis Pasadis and Stavros Theodosiou of the CYBARCO – A. PANAYIDES 91/2015 JV consortium.

The start of construction of phase A is scheduled for September 3, 2018. The Municipality of Nicosia has secured co-financing of the project from the European Structural and Investment Funds 2014-2020. The budget for Phase A amounts to €8,000,000 and construction works are expected to last for about 16 months.

The Project seeks to make the Nicosia commercial triangle an environmentally friendly urban space, competitive for investment and commercial activity and the first ‘intelligent’ urban space in our country.

This investment, was high on the priorities of the Nicosia Municipality’s Development Strategy and adopted high standards of sustainable urban planning. Among its aims are

– Upgrading the functionality and aesthetics of the urban environment.

– Creating large pavements eliminating uneven areas between private and public sidewalks and roads, in order to facilitate accessibility for pedestrians and people with disabilities as well as increase traffic.

– Creating small squares for open-air activities. With the addition of more than 330 trees and the application of the principles of bioclimatic design, shading will be enhanced and the number of hours pedestrians will be able to move comfortably will be increased.

– Undergrounding and improving all utilities.

The Municipality of Nicosia will inform interested parties and the public about the traffic arrangements in force during the project’s development.

The project is co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund, the State Budget and the Municipality of Nicosia in the framework of the 2014-2020 Programming Period, Operational Programme: Competitiveness and Sustainable Development 2014-2020, – Specific Objective: Enhancing mobility mainly in the urban area – Axis 5: Promoting Sustainable Transport and Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions .
