Updated: Paphos man remanded after baby hospitalised for suspected drug ingestion

Paphos police have arrested a 40 year old man from Paphos on suspicion of possessing and using a controlled substance and negligent and irresponsible actions which lead to bodily harm.

The man — the uncle of the baby — was remanded in custody for three days by Paphos district court but is not cooperating with police.

His arrest and remand follows the hospitalisation of a 17 month old boy who is believed to have swallowed drugs.

The little boy was taken to Paphos hospital in a comatose condition and with high temperature. The mother told the doctors that the child had fallen and hit his head. But the child continued to be drowsy and could not stand. Concerned doctors carried out specialist tests which revealed traces of opiates and cannabis.

He was given oxygen and intra-venous injections to dissolve the drugs in his body and taken to Makarios Hospital in Nicosia where he was initially put on a respirator.

The child is reported to be doing better and has been taken off the respirator.

CyBC said the child’s father is in prison for drug related offences. The child was living with his mother and grandmother, while his uncle — who is known to police for drug related offences — had been staying with them the past few days.

Police believe that the drugs were left somewhere accessible to the 17 month old, or that he may have inhaled fumes from the use of drugs in the house.

Paphos police searched the home and found drugs.

During the remand hearing, police said the 40 year old uncle was not cooperating with police and refusing to answer any questions.
