UN welcomes opening of crossing points

Τhe UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus and Head of Mission, Elizabeth Spehar, has welcomed the opening of two new crossing points in Cyprus, noting that “these crossing points will play an important role in helping to increase people to people contacts, contributing to build much needed trust and confidence between the communities on the island.”

Replying to a question by CNA about the opening on Monday of two new crossing points in Dherynia and Apliki-Lefka, Spehar said that “today is good day for Cyprus. We welcome the opening of the first crossing points in eight years. These crossing points will play an important role in helping to increase people to people contacts, contributing to build much needed trust and confidence between the communities on the island,” she added.

On his part, UN spokesperson in Cyprus Aleem Siddique told CNA that “we stand ready to support both sides for further confidence building measures that will help build trust between the communities.”
