UN envoy Lute extends stay in Cyprus for more talks with leaders

UN envoy Jane Holl Lute who prolonged her scheduled departure from Cyprus for two days will meet  again both leaders of the divided island on Wednesday.

At the same time, insiders say that a deal is close in agreeing on terms of reference paving the way for a new round of UN-brokered reunification talks.

She was initially due to leave the island on Monday after two separate meetings with President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. But she stayed to meet them both again on Tuesday, and then on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Anastasiades on Tuesday briefed the National Council on the meetings he has had with Lute since Sunday.

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said the process is close to agreeing terms of reference for a resumption of stalled Cyprus negotiations.

This, he added, paves the way for a joint meeting of the two leaders with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York later this month on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Lute will meet the President again today, Wednesday, at 9.15am. And she is scheduled to meet Akinci later in the day.
