The Paphos Assize imposed a sentence of two years in prison to a 20-year-old on trial for smuggling migrants.
The 20-year-old faced charges on offences such as aiding and abetting the illegal entry and stay of a third country national in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus for which he was sentenced to 18 months.
Smuggling of migrants in direct violation of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime for which he was sentenced to 2 years.
As the Court stated, the 20-year-old drove a boat with no experience increasing the risk of an accident and transported on December 22, 2019, 34 migrants.
The Court while announcing the sentence mentioned that such offences due to their frequency and seriousness are dealt strictly by Justice but it also noted that each case is judged on its own merit.
It was added that the court has an obligation to examine all the mitigating factors in every individual case.
The period the accused was held from December 30, 2019 will be taken into account in sentencing.
