Tour operators take a piece of Thomas Cook pie

Cyprus’ tourism industry is too dependent on giant travel operators overseas, considering that about 60% of the Mediterranean island’s visitors over the recent past years come through them.

UK’s market was shared by three such operators – including the recently-collapsed Thomas Cook group. Specifically, Thomas Cook, Tui and Jet 2 flew over to Cyprus 54% of UK visitors in 2017, according to Phileleftheros information.

That is why the blow to the island’s tourism industry by Thomas Cook’s collapse is huge. Afterall, it used to fly over some 5% of UK visitors annually, that is, 250,000 in numbers.

The state of play is different this year since operators are all trying to get collapsed Thomas Cook’s travellers. That is, tourists who consistently chose Cyprus for their holidays.

Tui is currently seeking to increase its share to 11%. It has already added more flights, and insiders said Tui already reached agreement with two hotels in Paphos that previously cooperated with Thomas Cook.

Jet2holidays records a steady upward trend in Cyprus. Four years ago it carried 30% of passengers with travel packages, while today that figure exceeds 70%.

Easyjet holidays, which has not yet announced its intentions is also eyeing the Cyprus market. This is a new venture of the group, and stakeholders in Cyprus are hoping for a close partnership. In Britain, online platforms (On the beach, Love holidays) seem to be also gaining momentum.
