The première of Rossini’s opera (under the title Il barbiere di Siviglia, ossia L’ inutile precauzione – The barber of Seville or The useless precaution) took place on 20 February 1816 at the Teatro Argentina, in Rome.

It constitutes a masterpiece of the operatic repertoire with a joyful mood, bursting with lovely melodies and arias, vividness and musical improvisations. Rossini completed the composition and orchestration of the opera as well in just 24 days, which is considered record time even for that era.

Il barbiere di Siviglia (The barber of Seville): The plot
The plot of the opera unfolds in 17th century Seville. The resourceful Figaro, the barber of Seville, agrees to help Count Almaviva win the heart of Rosina. Doctor Bartolo, the guardian of Rosina, plans to marry Rosina himself and hence tries to prevent the couple from falling in love with each other using various tricks. Every evening about 15,000 visitors come along to the Festival, to enjoy the happy and jolly atmosphere of people feasting with wine, delicious local dishes, at fixed low prices, local dances and songs and theatrical plays with comedy, humor and satire.

One night in the Limasol’s wine festival is an opportunity for every person to live the Greek tradition of the Dionysiac celebrations, when all inhabitants of Attica, citizens or farmers, sat at common banquets, offered free by the state, tasted the new wines and participate in the mass dances, songs, poetry and drama. During these celebrations a number of slaves were set free, whilst those still in slavery were allowed a spell of independence and entertainment. As then, here are the free banquets, the free wine, but there are no slaves to free, you can get free from every care of life from social conventions and formalities, from daily needs and worries of life.
