Due to the success of the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece” at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, it will be extended until June 30, 2020.
The exhibition features unseen faces of World War II and the participation of Cyprus and Greece.
World War II is described as the deadliest conflict mankind has ever known. Large – scale battles, immense disasters and incalculable human losses. People died of starvation and others lost their lives in Hitler’s concentration camps.
Behind all these are people and images. Anonymous heroes who achieved great things. Every image is a story; every person is a struggle for survival and dignity.
Greeks and Greek Cypriots who were under British rule at the time, found themselves at the front lines in the battlefields and experienced unprecedented moments.
The heavy price paid during WWII in the name of freedom is captured for the first time in Cyprus, in the exhibition “1940 | People and Images. Cyprus – Greece”, held at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in collaboration with the Embassy of Greece, under the support of the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media of Greece and the British High Commission in Nicosia.
The exhibition collects and displays real artefacts of WWII and pays tribute to the known and anonymous Greek and Greek Cypriot heroes of the War.
The exhibition will be inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiades, on Tuesday 9 April 2019, at 19:00, at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in Faneromeni.
Secretary General of Media and Communication of Greece, Christos Simos, the Ambassador of Greece in Cyprus, Elias Fotopoulos, the High Commissioner of Great Britain in Cyprus, Stephen Lilly, and the President of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, Symeon Matsis, will also address the opening of the exhibition.
In the framework of the exhibition Dimitis Vattis’ unique photography project “The War’s forgotten” is also displayed. A project which pays tribute to the forgotten veterans of the War who joined the fight against the Nazis.
The exhibition is curated by Catherine Loui Nikita [Director of BPR Cultural Management], while the texts are written by Dr. Petros Papapolyviou, Historian, Associate Professor, University of Cyprus, and Stelios Kymionis, Historian.
