Tension between Cypriot farmers and Turkish soldiers

There was tension in the Nicosia buffer zone on Saturday between Greek Cypriot farmers and Turkish soldiers, Philenews has reported.

It said that the incident occurred near SOPAZ. About ten armed Turkish soldiers appeared while four Greek Cypriots were working in the field.  UNFICYP warned the farmers to stop what they were doing and leave immediately.

Although the area belongs to the Republic of Cyprus and farmers are permitted to cultivate the land, at the same time, UNFICYP has urged Greek Cypriot farmers to stay 200 metres away from the Turkish sentry posts.

Farmers told the site that their work was being repeatedly interrupted by Turkish soldiers and said they would address the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday in order to discuss the issue.
