Suspended prosecution does not necessarily mean innocence, says AG

The Attorney-General on Thursday suspended prosecution of former deputy chief of police Andreas Kyriacou but also sent the message this does not mean he is innocent.

Nonetheless, Kyriacou who had been sacked from the force accused of leaking sensitive information to the media, said he felt vindicated and that he reserved all his legal rights.

Asked to comment on Kyriacou’s comment that his prosecution was wrong from day one, Costas Clerides made clear it was not his decision to request suspension of the prosecution.

“It is a request made by Mr Kyriacou himself, through his lawyer, and for specific reasons these were accepted by the Attorney General,” he said.

He was also asked whether the prosecution will continue to be suspended in the case where Kyriacou seeks compensation.

Clerides replied: “I will not answer on the substance of this, because every citizen has some legal means which he may or may not exercise at the advice of his lawyers.”

Kyriacou had been charged in relation with leaking information to the media regarding the assassination plans of an Ayia Napa businessman involved with the underworld.

He was specifically accused of leaking to the media that Serbian Interpol had given their Cypriot counterparts a tip that an assassination attempt was going to take place against Phanos Kalopsidiotis months before he was finally murdered in June 2016.

The police officer in Cyprus who was dealing with the information from Serbia called the man believed to be the mastermind behind the contract killing, apparently thinking he was actually calling Serbian Interpol. The hit was inevitably called off at the time.
