Some 600 Syrian migrants in Chlorakas must be relocated – but where?

Some 600 Syrian migrants living under unsafe conditions at an apartment complex in Chlorakas have to be relocated by Monday but authorities have nowhere to take them.

No practical solutions have been found even after Wednesday’s meeting at the Law Office of the Republic with all concerned parties, Philenews reported on Friday.

The Paphos District Officer issued a decree last November providing their immediate relocation because of the unsafe living conditions. But its implementation was postponed due to practical reasons.

Hours before the relocation deadline expires another issue raised is over who will implement it since there is a loophole in the relevant legislation.

Specifically, the law does not define who implements a relocation decree since the Law Office, Ministry of Interior and Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare are all involved.

Nonetheless, ways have to be found to dismantle the ghetto created in the area which sparks safety fears among all other residents.
