Some 2000 catering establishments reopen

Some 2000 of about 6000 licensed catering establishments are back in operation today, first day of phase two of the lockdown exit plan.

Phytos Thrasyvoulou who chairs, Sikap, the association of catering establishments said that Nicosia has the highest number of establishments opening, followed by Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos, with the free Famagusta area in last place.

He said owners have rearranged tables and chairs to comply with the decree which sets rules as regards distance between customers and limits the maximum size of a table to a party of 10.

The association has briefed businessmen on the rules and hygiene protocols they must adhere to for the safety of their customers and their staff.

Catering establishments are allowed to operate only outdoors provided they comply with the health and hygiene rules issued by the Health Ministry. This applies to restaurants, taverns, cafeterias, pizzerias, pubs, coffee shops and canteens of associations and clubs

The operation of the remaining establishments is prohibited (bars, nightclubs, discos, music/dance establishments) pending a review.

The ministry has clarified as regards bars that these can open if they have tables and chairs — a requirement for all businesses that will resume operation.
