Sixteen traffickers in migrants arrested in past three and a half months

Interior Ministry data shows that 11 cases of trafficking in irregular migrants all across Cyprus were investigated and 16 people arrested in the past three and a half months.

In addition, 10 cases of migrants’ trafficking were filed in courts island-wide, Philenews reported on Friday.

The data shows the intensification of combined efforts by the Aliens and Immigration Service and Police to stop the flow of informal migrants to Cyprus, it added.

Nicosia has long declared a state of emergency on the issue of immigration and seeks the support of other European Union countries to deal with the problem.

In total over 55 boats with migrants on board were intercepted this year so far with some traffickers – including Turkish Cypriots – already sent to prison.

The boats used in the illegal movement have been  confiscated.
