Six remanded after major drug bust

The container searched by Limassol and SBAs police in Ypsonas on Monday afternoon contained a total 104 kilos of cannabis, Limassol district court heard today during a remand hearing for two of the six people arrested in connection with the drug haul.

The other four were arrested in Ypsonas which falls within SBA jurisdiction and appeared before an SBA court today, which remanded them in custody for seven days.

The other two men –  a Bosnian who allegedly imported the container and a Greek Cypriot company owner – who were arrested on Republic of Cyprus territory –appeared before Limassol court on Tuesday morning and where remanded in custody for eight days.

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said that Monday’s drug bust was one of the biggest ever in Cyprus.

He added that in 2015 alone, police seized 226 kilos of cannabis, in 2016 they seized 170 kilos, in 2017 they seized 150 kilos, in 2018 they seized 318 and so far in 2019 they have seized 138 kilos. They have also seized 30 kilos of cocaine in 2019.

He said that Cypriot police will cooperate with authorities abroad to determine where they container came from and where did it stop before it arrived in Cyprus.

Besides the six arrests, police will investigate the procedures that were followed at Limassol’s port, where the container arrived.

Acting on information of a possible import of three containers with drugs from Canada, the drug squad had placed a number of containers, as well as premises and individuals under surveillance. They followed the specific container to Ypsonas and in cooperation with Bases police raided the premises.

In the container then found 350 packets of cannabis hidden in a container with plaster boards. Two Greek Cypriots and two Nigerians who were on site were arrested on the spot.
