Rise noted in non-prescription drug prices

A recent 5-10% rise in the price of over-the-counter medicine is to be raised by the Pancyprian Federation of Patients’ Associations and Friends for discussion in the competent Committee of Pharmaceutical Services of the Ministry of Health.

Pharmacists and pharmaceutical importers have confirmed that there was indeed a rise in drug prices. Importers attributed the phenomenon to the decreases in prescription drug prices in recent years, which have forced companies to raise the prices of over-the-counter medicine, which were liberalised as a counterpart, for sustainability reasons.

The President of the Pancyprian Federation of Patients’ Associations and Friends, Marios Kouloumas, has stated that rises in drug prices had been noted for a while. Recently, however, there have been a spike in the prices of widely used drugs such as painkillers. Kouloumas, countered the pharmaceutical importers claims by asserting that the price of over-the counter pharmaceutical are determined outside the pricing system that applies to prescription drugs by the importers themselves.

The Federation of Patients’ Associations intends to ask competent authorities to take measures to alleviate the financial burden on patients and the general public in Cyprus.
