Ayia Napa will join Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca in acquiring its own Recyclefish — a fish-shaped metal structure that serves as a giant ‘collection point’ for plastic bottles and other items.
The fish was created by artist Apostolos Panteli and the campaign is sponsored by pharmaceuticals and health care company Medochemie.
It will be installed at Landa beach in Ayia Napa at a special ceremony to be held on Friday at 10 am in the presence of Ayia Napa mayor Christos Zannettou and representatives of Medochemie.
“By installing the Recyclefish, Medochemie promotes the message of the active participation of the public in efforts to protect the environment, further enhancing the fight against pollution of the Mediterranean, which is being turned into a ‘plastic’ sea, ” Ayia Napa municipality said in a statement.
Medochemie will continue the installation of new, innovative recycling works on other beaches in Cyprus, in cooperation with local authorities and other competent bodies, the announcement added.
