Police: Road policing effective in fighting crime

Police said on Friday that road policing in the past three years has brought results in their fight against crime.

The announcement was accompanied by a table showing results concerning a number of offences in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

“In Cyprus, police have been implementing road policing since 2013 with the aim of dealing with crime more effectively through traffic patrols on the road network,” the police announcement said.

According to the table made public on Friday, road policing dealt with a total of 2333 offences/ cases in 2018, up on 1304 the previous year and nearly five times the 441 in 2016.

According to the breakdown, in 2018 road policing led to the detection of 49 illegal migrants (35 in 2017 and 11 in 2016) and 347 discoveries of drugs and other controlled substances (174 in 2017 and 79 in 2016).

There were also 117 cases of possession of illegal weapons (95 in 2017 and 41 in 2016) and 33 involving stolen property (52 in 2017 and 13 in 2016).

Other offences included stolen vehicles – 47 in 2018, 46 in 2017 and 26 in 2016; wanted or missing persons – 70 in 2018, 80 in 2017 and 48 in 2016 and possession of burglary tools – 28 in 2018, 14 in 2017 and 10 in 2016.
