Police are investigating a fake news story making the rounds in social media saying that a 12-year-old boy died in Limassol General Hospital after getting vaccinated against Covid-19, Philenews reported on Friday.
The report was made by Cyprus Pediatric Society’s head Michalis Anastasiades and police called for caution over fake news that cause unnecessary alarm.
They also asked on the public not to re-post such stories, especially if they are not confirmed by the state’s health authorities.
The police will investigate websites that hosted the specific story even if the alarming post has been removed.
People will be summoned and questioned on the basis of the law regarding the crime of spreading false news.
This is punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine of 2,652 euros or both.
Cyprus has seen a rise in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks, with the majority of those being taken to hospital unvaccinated.
