Police chief checks out compliance with decrees

Police chief Kypros Micchaelides on Saturday visited bakeries, supermarkets and other outlets to check compliance with decrees aimed at containing the spread of coronavirus.

And he said that police had stepped up patrols, particularly on highways and inter-city roads to preempt people heading to villages because of the Easter weekend– something prohibited under the stay at home decree

Police have also on alert against any attempt to build a lambradjia (Easter bonfire) which is also prohibited.

He told CyBC TV that overall he was satisfied with what he saw, although there was some room for improvement.

As an example he cited the signs on the ground at entrances of outlets.

He also said that while employees were in compliance with the requirement they wear masks and gloves, he urged the general public to be extremely careful.

“I appeal to the public to take their own measures and when out and about operate as if people around them are carriers,” he said.

For his part, Interior Minister Nicos Nouris urged people to stay home so as not to ruin what has been achieved in recent weeks.

He said that only when the number of coronavirus cases fall with the government discuss lifting the restrictive measures.

Preparations for a gradual relaxation were underway, but if numbers rose then the painful measures would continue.
