Picturesque spots on the island: Cyprus Dams

Cyprus has a total of 108 dams, located in various locations across the island. Considering that these artificial bodies of water are not only perfect fishing spots but also great parts of the landscape, are definitely worth to visit.

Pera Pedi Dam

Located two kilometers north of Pera Pedi village, it was built on Krios Potamos, a Kouris’ tributary. This specific dam was constructed by the Water Development Department and was first operated in 1956 for the irrigation of arable land. This artificial  body of water has a distinctive feature: its the concrete steps, also found on other dams of the island as well.
Capacity: 55.000 m3.

Kafizes Dam

It is located in the heart of Paphos’ forest, in the Xeros Potamos valley. A small dam, yet one of the most beautiful on the island.

Asprokremmos Dam
Asprokremmos dam is the second largest in Cyprus. It was built at an altitude of about 100 m above sea level and is located 16 km, east of the city of Pafos. Due to poor rainfall, The dam rarely overflows due to poor rainfall.

Kouris Dam
Kouris is listed as the biggest dam of Cyprus. It lies at an altitude of 250 metres and collects the water delivered by the rivers Kouris, Limnatis and Kryos.

Mavrokolympos Dam
Mavrokolympos Dam is located just a few kilometres away from Paphos town. You can reach the dam by crossing the road that links Paphos and Coral Bay. Built in 1960, above the Mavrokolympos river, the dam is the ideal spot for birdwatching.
Visit Mavrokolympos area especially in spring to enjoy the first delightful blooms stretching out, signalling that the cold winter has gone away!

Solea Dam
It is located near the villages Linou – Flasou. It collects water delivered by the rivers Karyotis and Atsas. It is a beautiful place to visit, especially during spring.

Kannaviou Dam
It is located in the valley of the river of Ezousa, about 4km from Paphos’ town. A great birdwatching point, as many species of birds live there.

Vyzakia Dam
It is found on the north side of the Village Vyzakia (Solea Valley).
Year of Operation: 1994
Capacity: 1.690.000 m3

Evretou Dam
The Evretou Dam is located 8km outside Polis Chrysochous (Paphos). It is the third largest dam in Cyprus. It was named after the abandoned village of Evretou, located close to the dam.
Year of Operation: 1986
Capacity: 24,000,000 m3

Arminou Dam
It is fed by the beautiful Diarizos Rives and that is why it is considered a memorable place to visit. It is also right next to the known Tzelefos Medieval bridge, just 5km north of Salamiou and 40km from the city of Paphos. Here, you can have a wonderfall walk in nature.
Capacity: 4,300.000 m3

Xyliatos Dam
It is located in a breathtaking area between Xyliatos and Lagoudera villages, about 45km from Nicosia. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit and a nature trail as well. An exceptional spot for pic nic and sky observation at night.

Kalopanagiotis dam
It is located at the Marathasa Valley, outside the village of Kalopanagiotis. It is filled by the Setrachos river. This is the favorite place of fishermen. The species you are likely to find there are rainbow trout, the Brown trout, Alburnus and Mosquito fish.
Capacity: 36,000 m3

Germasogeia Dam
It is located in the village of Germasogeia in the Limassol district. This dam attracts hundreds of fishermen every year. Beautiful nature trails are passing around the dam area, such as the “Kiparissia trail”.

Lympia Dam
It is build by Tremithos River, close to Mosfiloti village.
It is a small dam in a green area.
Distance: 22km

Prodromos Dam
It is located in Prodromos village, 5km away from Troodos Square.
Prodromos Dam is a great place for pic nic on a nice weather. It can host up to 250 people.
