Paralimni plans major €19m revamp of town centre

Paralimni is working on a multi-million euro revamp of the town centre as part of plans to make the town more accessible to pedestrians.

Mayor Theodoros Pyrillis told the Cyprus News Agency that a traffic study would be presented today and once the town planning permit is issued, the project will get underway.

It will also be discussed with residents at a public consultation to be held before the end of the month.

Plans should be ready within the next months. Construction will take about two years and cost an estimated €19m.

The proposal is for the central square, all of Archbishop Makarios Avenue and an area at Ayia Marina to be pedestrianised.

“The aim is to ensure locals and tourists can enjoy the centre safely and without any obstacles,” he said.

Pyrillis said the plan also provides for green areas, children’s play areas and other facilities to improve accessibility and encourage entrepreneurship.

An old house near old stadium has been acquired that will be used as a small museum, he added.

“The proposed proposed projects aim to make Paralimni a town that is friendly and attractive to social, environmental and business activities,” Pyrillis said.

It will help develop the commercial area and the municipality’s central core, upgrading the quality of life of residents and visitors, he added.
