Paphos hotels expect 80% occupancy over Christmas holidays

Paphos hoteliers expect occupancy rates of some 80% over the Christmas holidays, the president of the local chapter of the Cyprus Hotels Association Thanos Michaelides said on Wednesday,

He told the Cyprus News Agency that bookings were satisfactory with keen interest from the local market.

As regards 2019, Michaelides said he remains concerned about the Russian market, which does not appear to be showing signs of recovery. As long as the rouble remains low, the Russian market is expected to remain at the same levels as in 2018, he added.

There is concern also about the British market because of the uncertainty over Brexit.

“If  Brexit takes a negative turn and the pound sterling slips further, then this is certain to have a negative impact on tourism to Cyprus,” he said, as Cyprus will be comparatively more expensive.

He expressed the hope there would be growth in the German market, noting that this would be the only way to make up any shortfall in the British market and substantially change all-year hotel occupancy rates in Paphos.
