Paphos drivers in Nicosia protest to demand wages

Paphos bus drivers will demonstrate in Nicosia on Tuesday to press for resolution to a protracted dispute between the Transport Ministry and their company as a result of which they have still not been paid for November.

The drivers have been on strike since last week demanding payment of theor November wages and assurances for their December and 13th salaries.

Their employers and the government have been locked in a dispute after an audit found that the bus company had been over-paid by the state. The government is asking to be reimbursed, while the bus company disputes the audit.

Bus drivers will demonstrate outside the Presidential Palace, the House of Representatives and the Transport Ministry. They say they will continue their indefinite strike unless they are paid for November and receive safeguards for December and their 13th salaries.

They are asking for the mediation of President Nicos Anastasiades and of House President Demetris Syllouris.

Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry announced late yesterday that it has made payments for October and November to the Paphos bus company and urged it not to victimise its employees because of an economic dispute with the ministry. It also called on the company to comply with the provisions of their agreements and submit all the relevant data so that their dispute can be resolved.
