Paphos: 24 year old detained for resisting arrest, assaulting police officer

A 24 year old man from the Paphos district is under arrest on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

Police said that at around 9.10 pm, the suspect was spotted using his mobile phone as he headed to Paphos police headquarters. Moreover, he was not wearing his seat belt.

He was asked by the police officer to show his driver’s licence and informed that he would be booked.

The young man reportedly started shouting threats and insults at the police officer and when informed that he was under arrest, he resisted and fell to the ground on his own, police said.

He was finally immobilised by police officers and handcuffed. The police officers noticed scratches on his face, apparently as a result of his fall.

The 24 year old was taken to the police station and arrested. He asked to be examined by a doctor and filed a complaint against the police officer which will be examined by the independent committee.

The young man, who is under guard at Paphos Hospital, is to be examined by a state pathologist. A police officer also went to hospital where doctors found abrasions on his hands and shinbones.

Police are investigating.
