Orange alert for tomorrow, temperatures to hit 43 C

The Met Office has issued an extreme high temperature warning for tomorrow when temperatures will hit a maximum of 43 C inland.

Temperatures have been between 10 C to 12 C above the seasonal average for several days, and the heat wave is expected to continue until Thursday.  A drop in temperature is forecast on Friday and there may be thunderstorms over the weekend.

Today’s new warning is orange — a level higher than the yellow alert which was in force until 5 pm today. An orange alert had also been issued yesterday.

The new warning is valid from 10 pm tonight to 5 pm tomorrow.

Tonight the minimum temperature is expected to be around 26 C over the inland areas and around 28 C over the southern coastal areas.

Tomorrow, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 43 C over the inland areas, around 39 C over the southern coastal areas, around 37 C over the western coastal areas and around 33 C over the mountains, the Met Officet said.

“Be prepared that high temperatures will lead to health risks amongst vulnerable people e.g. the elderly and very young. Listen to and act upon advice from the authorities,” it added.

Maximum temperatures at 3 pm today were:

Nicosia: 42°C

Larnaca Airport: 40 C

Limassol: 38°C

Paphos Airport: 36°C

Frenaros: 39°C

Prodromos: 32°C
