Opposition Akel’s political bureau wants former negotiator Mavroyiannis as presidential runner

Former Cyprus problem chief negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis is the candidate to be proposed by the political bureau to the central committee of main opposition Akel for February 2023’s presidential elections.

This is what Philenews reported on Friday adding that the left-wing party’s central committee is meeting over the weekend for further debate on this hot issue and final decisions.

The political bureau met for two days in a row and had two candidates under consideration – Mavroyiannis and human rights legal expert Achilleas Demetriades who is already running as an independent.

Insiders said Mavroyiannis is by majority the favourite of the political bureau but  some members have said the road is not over and that this could be overturned during the central committee’s deliberations.

However, this is highly unlikely since, historically, Akel’s Central Committee has never ever overturned a proposal on a presidential candidate tabled by the political bureau.

Insiders also said there was strong opposition to Mavroyiannis’s candidacy in the political bureau by a small number of members who ‘fought’ for Demetriades who has made clear he is to contest the election one way or another.
