As expected, there has been a significant uproar following the approval of the bill for same-sex marriage in Greece. Statements and comments regarding whether it should have been approved or not, and of course when and if the same will happen in Cyprus, abound.

Where to begin and where to end with this issue? What my eyes have seen in the past few days on social media is indescribable.

Not only from those who disagree with the relevant bill but also from those who support it, sparking a discussion at a third-world level. First, concerning the elimination of discrimination, and second, regarding the adoption of children, something that disturbs most people.

After a small search, I was fortunate enough to come across statements from children in Greece who were raised in families with either two women or two men as parents.

The general conclusion was that they grew up in a happy environment, without discrimination, and their sexual orientation was not affected to the extent that some who disagree with the establishment of such a family believe.

Because what we were taught from a young age is that the “norm” in a family consists of a father, mother, and children. Anything else is considered “unnatural”.

On the other hand, supporters of this specific bill, for the most part, flooded the mass media with positive messages, as finally, in Greece, they will have the freedom to marry if they wish and to be legally recognized as spouses.

However, for some, it became an opportunity to start a propaganda campaign, opposing anything contrary and thus diminishing the value of this huge change that took place in the country.

It goes without saying that there are two camps on this issue. However, both should respect the opinions and beliefs of each individual without trying to impose their own on others, what they believe.

What each person wants to be and what anyone chooses to believe and follow is no one else’s concern! As long as it doesn’t affect anyone else’s life, it is at least regrettable for anyone to attempt to impose their views and beliefs.

Respect is very difficult to earn and is not something that can be imposed on someone. But for it to exist finally, everyone must look at their own life, their own home, and stop meddling in the lives of others.

However, the world is not yet ready. And it may never be ready to accept something that goes beyond the stereotypes it has created. In an ideal society, in an ideal era, this could become a reality. In the society and era we live in, things are difficult…
