The implementation of road policing yielded significant results, police announced on Tuesday.
“Road policing is a modern, international method of policing, which effectively contributes to the prevention of road traffic accidents and, more generally, to the fight against crime. Cyprus police has been implementing road policing since 2013, aiming to tackle crime more effectively through road traffic controls,” the announcement said.
Police released figures which show the number of offences, officers have investigated from 2015, since October 31, 2018, via road policing.
The total number of offences investigated, increased from 425 in 2015 to 1,914 in the first ten months of 2018.
Drivers found carrying drugs increased from 48 in 2015 to 109 in 2018. Those who carried illegal weapons increased from 48 to 109.
The number of illegal immigrants found, doubled in the same time period, from 21 to 42.
The number of missing/wanted persons found on the road, increased from 25 in 2015 to 64 in 2018.
Other offences, including traffic violations, are up from 213 to 1,237.
