Residents from 11 north Pitsilia villages are pressing for the construction of a dam at the Serahi river.
Community leaders joined by representatives of farmers’ organisations and residents from the 11 villages gathered at the Forest Station Bridge of Panayia yesterday where they used buckets to draw up some water from the Serahis river to make their point.
“All we want is a little water. We just want our share,” they said.
They added that they did not want to stop the flow of the river, but for a small amount to fill a small dam, adequate to cover their needs.
The participating villages are Platanistassa, Alona, Polystipos, Livadhia, Alithinou, Fterikoudi, Mitsero, Ayios Epiphanios, Ayia Marina, Kato Moni and Orounda.
A 1997 cabinet decision to construct a 6 million cubic metres dam in the area has remained on paper. The demonstrators approved a resolution which they will deliver to the Agriculture Minister and the Water Development Department.
