Promoting the love for reading

Relevant News

On the 4th of January 2021 an online event from the ReadTwinning Partners

The meeting will introduce the Erasmus+ project “ReadTwinning: Connecting students through shared interests to develop a love for reading”, promoted by Forum del Libro with Scoala Gimnaziala “Constantin Parfene” (Romania), Dimotiko Scholeio Makedonitissas 3 – Stylianou Lena (Cyprus), and Agrupamento de Escolas de Vila Nova de Paiva (Portugal), GRYD (UK), European University Cyprus and ProgettoMondo Mlal (Italy).

COVID-19 has impacted students, teachers and parents everywhere, revealing “the unpreparedness of education systems, infrastructure, educators and learners for distance learning, and the fragility of adult literacy programmes. It hit hardest those who were already marginalized, including 617 million children and adolescents who were failing to acquire basic reading and numeracy skills even before the crisis” (UNESCO, 2020).

Fostering the motivation in reading is the key word of ReadTwinning: thanks to an innovative approach it aims to increase the love for reading among 9-15 years old students and in turn improve literacy.  ReadTwinning readers from different years, schools, cities, and even countries can find reading partner with similar interests and enjoy books together.

To do this ReadTwinning is working with teachers and students but also involving parents to support pro-reading strategies and joining other relevant stakeholders such as public libraries, digital publishers, local organisations, “GLAM” actors, technologists and digital makers, and citizens.

Some outputs will help in this strategy:

  • ReadTwinning Guidelines to help teachers and stakeholders in implementing the project
  • An Open Education Resource Platform and toolkits which connect students based on similar interests, shaping for them a rich, motivating, shared reading environment
  • A set of practical lessons plans to help teachers and parents
  • Two blended courses for Connected teachers and parental engagement.

On the 4th of January 2021 from 17:00 to 19:00 CET the ReadTwinning Partners organize a Dissemination online event directly from the Facebook and YouTube page of the project to present the project and its activities.

Some experts coming from the different European countries will attend.

Mr. Giulio Blasi will present his work experience with the Media Library Online, the first and largest Italian digital library.

Elena Perikleous from Cyprus is a head teacher. She is an Award-winning author, who will delight the participants with a reading moment to reiterate – if it should be necessary – the importance, the beauty and the extremely fundamental value of the art of storytelling.
