The Cyprus Youth Board (ONEK) finally decided on Wednesday to stop paying 50% of the salary disgraced former volunteerism commissioner Yiannis Yiannaki was still receiving even though he faces five forgery charges.

Yiannaki whose trial is scheduled for October 5 but the legal proceedings could last for over a year has been finally forced into retirement.

He had stepped down as commissioner last year amidst a police investigation ordered by the Auditor-General.

Evidence had emerged that he manipulated his high school diploma grades and included a fake college degree on his CV.

ONEK’s action on Wednesday was preceded by a letter sent to them and leaked to the media in which the Auditor-General told the board they are obliged to seek legal assistance to force Yiannaki into retirement while seeking damages.

Board members told Philenews procedures towards forcing Yiannaki into retirement began before the Auditor-General had sent the letter.
