Whirlwinds in Cyprus: a look at previous incidents

Though this may be of little comfort to property owners in Ayious Trimithias and Paliometoho,  Cyprus can count a number of whirlwinds in recent memory.

According to Philenews, since 1966 there have been whirlwinds (in chronological order) in Limassol, Episkopi, Athienou, Lysi, Yeroskipou, Konia, Pervolia, Paphos, Kiti, Avgorou, Pissouri-Moni, Aradippou, Lythrodontas, Troulloi, Avdimou, Chlorakas, Kilani, Kophinou, Polemdhia, Dhekelia, Oroklini, Dasaki tis Achnas, Nicosia, Kornos, Mari, Alaminos, Alethriko, Timi, Peyia, Paralimni, Mosphiloti, Lymbia , Mathiatis, Kaimakli, Dromolaxia, Phinikoudes and Strovolos among other.

In fact, according to one report a whirlwind in Nicosia in the 1940s ‘lifted’ a carriage from the Lykavitos police station area and carried it all the way to where the Hilton is currently situated. The carriage driver was killed.

One of the biggest whirlwinds recently was that in Latsia on September 18, 2009 that was accompanied by rain and hail. Eleven people were injured, primarily as a result of falling trees, broken glass and road accidents, while there was considerable material damage.

There was damage in Latsia, Aglandjia, Palliouriotissa and Strovolos. The whirlwind lifted roofs, solar heaters and tiles, while fallen trees blocked roads. Ten houses were ruled as dangerous as a result of damage sustained.

Last May there was considerable damage from a whirlwind between Klirou and Fikardou in the Nicosia district which uprooted trees and damages buildings. There was one injury. Also damaged was a photovoltaic park, a farm with animals, cultivation and a greenhouse.

In October 2010, a whirlwind damaged a fair underway in Oroklini, but luckily there were no injuries.
