What do Cypriots use the Internet for?

Most Cypriots used the internet in 2018 to find information about goods and services, according to a Eurostat survey.

According to the study, in 2018, 72% of Cypriots aged 16-74 who participated in the survey, reported they had used the internet to find information about goods and services.

Many Cypriots also used the internet to participate in social networks (69%) and watch video content (68%).

Around half of Cypriot participants in the survey (54%) said they had used the internet for emails. A third (33%) said they used the internet for online banking, which was among the lowest percentages in the EU.

Just 1% said they used the internet to make an appointment with a practitioner, while 2% said they sold goods or services online in 2018. Both were the lowest percentages in the EU. The EU average for the former was 17% and for the latter was 19%

Also, 30% of Cypriot participants said they had played or downloaded games online in 2018, which was close to the EU average of 29%. The biggest gamers, according to Eurostat were the Dutch with 44%.

At the time of the survey in 2018, 84% of Cypriots participants said they had used the internet in the previous three months. The percentage was just below the EU average of 85%.

The EU citizens who reported the most internet use were those of Denmark with 98% and of the Netherlands and the UK with 95%.

The countries with the lowest percentage of internet use were Bulgaria (65%), Romania (71%) and Greece (72%).

Internet use in the EU has grown rapidly over the years – in 2007 it stood at 57% and in 2012 at 73%.
