Water levels at dams rise to 31.1% of capacity (video)

Relevant News

Fresh inflows of water into the dams as a result of recent rains has pushed up levels to 31.1% of capacity,  more than twice those on the same day last year.

According to figures published by the Water Development Department on its website on Tuesday,  total water levels in the dams stand at 90.422 million cubic metres (mcm) — equivalent to 31.1% of total capacity. They were 40.489  mcm or 13.9% of capacity on the same day last year.

So far in January, 42.271 mcm of water has flowed into the dams, twice that for the entire month last year. Water inflow into the dams since October is 60.001 mcm which is more than 44.891 mcm collected over the period of October 2017 to 2018.

The highest inflow of water into the dams recorded in the past 10 years was in  2011-2012 which saw levels boosted by 191.754 mcm. In contrast, 2015-2016 was a very bad year with an inflow of only 17.907 mcm.

As a result the abundant rains, five small dams  have overflowed — Argakas, Pomos, Mavrokolymbos, Xyliatos and Kalopanayiotis.

But officials are keeping their eyes on the three biggest dams — Kourris, Asprokremmos and Evretou which together account for most of the island’s water capacity.

Kourris dam, the island’s biggest is 24% full (compared to 8% last year), Asprokremmos  41.5% (19.2% last year)  and Evretou 46.2% (29.2% last year).
