A Vietnamese woman has been jailed for eight months after admitting to using her sister’s name to marry a Greek national, Phileleftheros reported on Tuesday.
The husband was unaware of the ‘mistaken identity’ and says wants to remarry her with her actual name.
The issue arose during an interview at the Immigration Department where the woman admitted that she had used a passport with her sister’s name in order to return to Cyprus to work, after having worked here under her real identity for several years.
The case was reported to the police which charged her with sham marriage, forgery, circulation of a forged document and making a false statement.
She appeared before Nicosia district court where she pleaded guilty to the charges and was jailed for eight months.
It is unclear whether she will be allowed to remain in Cyprus or whether she will be deported.
