The Foreign Ministry has so far received ‘very few’ telephone calls regarding the coronavirus outbreak in China, and nothing worrying has emerged, the Cyprus News Agency reports.
It said the calls were made by Cypriots visiting China or Cyprus residents planning to visit or with relatives in the country.
CNA said the calls were in the single digits. Callers wanted information on issues such as what was happening at the airports. They were informed that the airport at Wuhan, the city at the centre of the outbreak is closed.
The Health Ministry has issued a plan of action in the event of a case of coronavirus being detected in Cyprus whereas the Foreign Ministry yesterday issued a travel advisory.
Although Cyprus’ embassy in Beijing is currently closed because of the Chinese new year holidays, there is continuous contact between the embassy and the foreign ministry’s crisis management unit on the issue, CNA added.
In its travel advice regarding the coronavirus outbreak in China yesterday the Foreign Ministry said that citizens of the Republic of Cyprus who live permanently or plan to travel to China are asked to avoid travel to the city of Wuhan/ Hubei district because of an epidemic of a new strain of coronavirus which is transmitted by human contact.
Cypriot citizens are also asked to monitor local and international media on developments regarding the virus and comply with instructions of the authorities of the People’s Republic of China, including individual protection measures, it added.
All public transport in Wuhan has been halted since January 23, including trains and buses to the city. Flights have also stopped. The Chinese authorities are taking measures to protect and inform the public. Similar measures have been implemented in 13 towns in Hubei district.
The death toll in China has risen to 56, authorities reported on Sunday. Nearly 2000 people have been infected globally, most of them in China, with the pneumonia-like illness.
