Relevant News

The United States remains firmly supportive of efforts to reunify the island, US President Donald Trump has told Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades in a congratulatory message on Cyprus Independence Day.

In his message President Trump said that “the partnership between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus is stronger than ever and we look forward to maintaining close cooperation based on our shared values and interests,” a presidency press release says.

“The continued strengthening of our bilateral ties will ensure the stability of the Eastern Mediterranean region and foster increased economic, security and energy development,” he added.

Trump further pointed out that “the United States remains firmly supportive of efforts to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation, and believes its achievement would bring peace and prosperity to all Cypriots.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.  Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
