Update: Cobalt suspends operations

Relevant News

Cobalt on Wednesday night announced it was cancelling all flights as from 23.50 on October 17 due to the indefinite suspension of its operations.

“As a result, future flights or services provided by Cobalt will be cancelled and will no longer operate,” it said on its website.

“Passengers who have un-flown tickets are instructed not to go to Larnaca Airport or any departure airport tomorrow, 18 October 2018 as no Cobalt flights will operate and no Cobalt staff will be present,” it added.

For refunds, please contact your credit card provider or Travel Agent, the airline said.

“We sincerely apologise once again and would like to thank our very loyal customers for their support over the last two years of Cobalt operations,” the airline concluded.

Meanwhile, a meeting was underway late into the night at the Transport Ministry with the participation of Civil Aviation, the accountant general’s office, Hermes Airports and other officials in order to best organise the repatriation of passengers stranded as a result of the suspension of Cobalt’s operations.

In an announcement, the ministry said it had been informed that the airline was suspending operations and was making every effort to minimise inconvenience to Cobalt passengers.

It also expressed its sadness both at the suspension of the company’s operations and the problems this will create to passengers.

The Transport Ministry said that passengers on flights that were scheduled for the night of October 17-18 are asked to secure their own one-way tickets in economy class, and keep receipts for compensation.

Passengers who were due to fly on Cobalt in the next seven days will be informed about their repatriation with a new announcement.

Earlier on Wednesday, news media said that Cobalt had already informed the Transport Ministry and the Air Transport Licensing Authority. The latter had set a meeting for Thursday to examine developments regarding the airline’s shareholders, Philenews said.

It said the board of directors had initially decided to wait until tomorrow to see whether an agreed transfer from a foreign investment fund would be made, but chose to suspend flights after  indications this would not materialise, it added.
